1st Amendment Under Siege: Police Target Journalists As Trump Escalates Attacks Against The Media

Published

on

Across the country, journalists are being targeted by police, facing arrest, detention, and violence, including being pepper-sprayed and shot by rubber bullets. That shocking number of attacks continued into this weekend’s protests. Meanwhile, Donald Trump signaled his approval by attacking reporters on Twitter.

Like a fascist, Trump has spent the last 3 1/2 years demeaning and discounting journalists and journalism. From the cry of “Fake News” to his idiotic adoption of Sarah Palin’s “lamestream media” to his condemnation of media as “the enemy of the people,” he has made a point of delegitimizing actual reporting in favor of his propaganda outlets, Fox News and more recently, OANN.

On Sunday, after two days of unwarranted arrests of journalists and physical attacks on them by police, Trump tweeted this:

“The Lamestream Media is doing everything within their power to foment hatred and anarchy. As long as everybody understands what they are doing, that they are FAKE NEWS and truly bad people with a sick agenda, we can easily work through them to GREATNESS!”

That reference to “truly bad people with a sick agenda” is nothing more than a dog whistle for the law-and-order types who subscribe to his autocratic outlook to take on the threat he describes and “work through them to GREATNESS.”

And the heard it. Look at what DID happen to journalists at these protests at the hands of police: Arrests and violent attacks. The video above is Ali Velshi, who was reporting on a PEACEFUL protest when all hell broke loose. The cops threw tear gas canisters and shot rubber bullets into a protest where no one was violent.

Evidence of these various attacks on journalists are too long to post all of them here, but here are some examples:

‘I can’t In Good Countenance Continue To Show This’: Fox News Cut Away From Trump’s Press Sec. For Pushing Baseless Claims Of Election Fraud

Published

on

Fox News anchor Neil Cavuto on Monday cut away from a press briefing featuring Kayleigh McEnany, who is both the White House press secretary and a Trump campaign spokesperson, as she continued to push Donald Trump’s baseless claims of election fraud.

“She’s charging the other side as welcoming fraud and illegal voting. Unless she has more details to back that up, I can’t in good countenance continue to show you this,” Cavuto said as he cut off the press conference, pushing back on what he described as “explosive” charges from McEnany.

“Not so fast,” Cavuto added.

McEnany suggested, without evidence, that Democrats welcomed “fraud” and “illegal voting” in the 2020 election.

“We want every legal vote to be counted,” McEnany said, echoing President Donald Trump’s unsubstantiated claim that votes for President-elect Joe Biden were illegal.

Though multiple major news outlets, including Fox News, have declared Biden the projected winner of the 2020 election, Trump has refused to concede and is rejecting the results, claiming that he won the election.

Meanwhile, a number of world leaders have congratulated Biden on his victory, including UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Even before the end of voting on November 3, the president repeatedly signaled he would claim the election was “rigged” against him if he lost, but there is no evidence to substantiate such claims.
